[edit] Origin

The project was created by Matt Mullenweg to support users of WordPress. Existing bulletin-board software was overly sophisticated for those requirements[2], so bbPress was created with the same focus as WordPress: a functional and extensible core, with all other capabilities delivered through plugins[3].

[edit] Release History

The first official release occurred on Oct 14th, 2006 and it was labeled as version 0.72 "bix"[4], a revision number which was chosen (rather after than arrived at). Supported features included built in support for Akismet, integration with the WordPress user database, and RSS feed support. Early reviews described the release as "minimalist"[5]

The announcement of bbPress 0.73[6] brought with it improved rewrite rules, a new template, support for languages other than English, and an easy-to-use installer similar to WordPress.

The 0.81 release "Desmond"[7] added more features, such as better timezone configuration and forum deletion. There is an interim patch for the latest version to fix issues until the next official release[8].

Note: bbPress' versioning has been corrected from this point forward. Previous versions should have read 0.7.2, 0.7.3, 0.8, 0.8.1

The 0.8.2.1 release "Desmond" adds features such as pretty permalinks, easier plugin management and hierarchical forums (sub-forums). The initial 0.8.2 release had a security hole that was patched by the 0.8.2.1 release. [9][10]

The latest official release is currently 0.8.3, also named "Desmond". Improvements include "better search" and compatibility with WordPress 2.3. [11]

[edit] Development

The development of bbPress is formally managed through an issue tracking system[12] and mailing list[13].

Informal discussion and support is available on the bbPress support forum[14].
