Encoresoup:Importing from Wikipedia
From Encoresoup - The Ultimate Guide to Free/Open Source Software
This is a guide for importing an article from Wikipedia. You should follow this when you find a Wikipedia article that falls under our inclusion policy.
This is not a guide for administrators. It does not describe the use of the Import Page functionality available to administrators. It describes the manual method available for anyone to use.

[edit] Step 1 - Naming the article
The obvious thing to do might seem to be to create the article on Encoresoup under the same name as it has on Wikipedia. However this is not always the correct approach.
Bear in mind that Wikipedia has a much broader scope than Encoresoup. This means that on Wikipedia articles often have to qualified to indicate the subject matter. For example the article title might have (software) appended to it.
Where appropriate choose an article title free of such suffixes.
Create the article by entering encoresoup.net/<article> into the browser address box.
[edit] Step 2 - Copy the text
Fairly obvious this bit. Just click the "Edit" or "View Source" tab on the article in Wikipedia and copy all the text to the clipboard. Switch to the Encoresoup article and paste the text into it. (You might want to do this with both sites open in separate tabs)
What you do next is a matter of personal taste. Some people might prefer to save a 'virgin' copy of the article text and then immediately edit the article again before proceeding to the following steps. Others might prefer to just go ahead to do the job in a single revision. Either way is fine.
Admin Note: Whatever you do next make sure it is on Encoresoup, not Wikipedia! I've accidentally edited the wrong version of a page twice so far, believe me it gets more embarrassing each time!
[edit] Step 3 - Add Wikipedia-Attrib Template
When importing an article from Wikipedia, it is a requirement of the GFDL license that credit is given to the articles contributors. To fulfil this obligation every such article should contain a link back to the Wikipedia article it was taken from, so any interested party can go there and pick up the trail of the contributors in the article's history.
To achieve this - at the very top of the article put the following :
{{Wikipedia-Attrib|<article name>}}
|
This will create a box at the top of the article similar to the one on the right here.
[edit] Step 4 - Sort out the Categories
Unlike Wikipedia, Encoresoup has a strict category policy, designed to ensure all articles appear at appropriate places in the Category Browser.
For this reason you should not leave an article with the Wikipedia categories intact. If you have the time, please try to replace the categories with ones used by Encoresoup. If you are unable to do so, then at least comment out all the existing category tags. Bear in mind that this article will not appear in the Category Browser unless this is remedied later.
[edit] Step 5 - Comment out the Interwiki links
We do not currently use Interwiki links in Encoresoup, because Encoresoup is currently only available in English. So please comment out all the Interwiki links from the article by placing the HTML comment tags (<!-- ... -->) around them.
This is preferable to removing them, because Encoresoup plans to add multi-language support at a later date.
Admin Note: The reason why Encoresoup is currently only available in English, is purely because this is the only language I speak! I would therefore be unable to effectively admin a multi-language site. I am perfectly happy to create additional sub-domains, as and when suitable volunteers step forward with the time and commitment to admin them.
[edit] Step 6 - Remove unnecessary links
Once copied to Encoresoup, most of the links which previously pointed to other Wikipedia articles will now point nowhere! So these need tidying up. Generally speaking the following action should be taken, but this is only a guide.
- Any links to other Free/Open Source software articles should be checked. If the article already exists but the link does not point there (for example because it doesn't have the same exact name) then adjust the link.
- If the link is for a computer-related term, then you may wish to fix the link so it once again points to Wikipedia. You should use your judgement to decide if this is appropriate. (You can link to Wikipedia by adding 'w:' to be beginning of the link)
- Other links should usually be removed from the article.
