Mapnik is an free software toolkit for developing mapping applications. Mapnik is written in C++ and there are Python bindings to facilitate fast-paced and agile development. Mapnik can comfortably be used for both desktop and web development.

At present, full support is provided for Linux only, although alpha quality source is available for Microsoft Windows.

Mapnik supports data access plugins, allowing users to expand its data format support.

As of 10/18/2006, Mapnik comes with support for:

  • ESRI shape files
  • PostGIS
  • Web Map Service
  • TIFF raster

In May 22 2006, Mapnik's license changed from the GNU General Public License to GNU Lesser General Public License.[1]
