RevTeX is a collection of LaTeX macros. It was created by the American Physical Society, American Institute of Physics and Optical Society of America to facilitate the publishing of their journals. It is maintained by American Physical Society. RevTeX is popular among scientists who submit papers to journals published by these 3 organizations. A few other scientific journals also accept RevTeX-formatted manuscripts for electronic publishing.
RevTeX v3.1 was released in September 1996 and version v4.0 was released in August 2001. However version 4 is not backward compatible with version 3.
Originally RevTeX was designed to be similar to American Astronomical Society's AASTeX.
